retirementStanford and Harvard are offering something new for retired and about to retire boomers: a college refresher in retirement.

Stanford’s Distinguished Careers Institute is offering a program that is designed to help the transition to the later part of a career or a new one in retirement.

And it is no slouch summer program of just auditing or skipping classes. It is described as academically rigorous, can cover everything from business to medicine and includes a final review before an academic panel.

Stanford’s program is $60,000, and Harvard says its is less but won’t say how much.

Forgoing a life of leisure in retirement is becoming more and more popular and will offer all kinds of benefits to the retired person and this country.

As more people work later in life, that will ease a lot of financial issues for those not fully prepared financially to retire and also ease the Social Security crunch.

And the numbers indicate we stay healthier longer if we stay mentally active.

Fewer people drawing Social Security, more paying taxes longer and fewer medical problems associated with a sedentary lifestyle.

And working in retirement is described as more fun and more rewarding.

As more and more boomers realize they cannot sit at home in front of the TV for 30 years – well, most will not be able to anyway – we will see a big push for this type of activity to keep us viable longer.

Expect to see a lot more of this kind of college/training program for retired persons.

In fact, I can see a very good business opportunity developing around this idea of retraining or refreshing our job skills.

And who knows, there may even be a rebirth of the spring break for people over 60. That might actually be a riot. Imagine us taking over Lauderdale again.

The retirement my parents knew is long gone. Stay active and productive in retirement. It is the new way and a lot more affordable.
