Every week we track analyst upgrades across the market. Sometimes they don’t mean much: one analyst upgrades a stock… another downgrades it… and the market shrugs.

But occasionally something different happens: multiple firms begin upgrading the same stock at the same time.

When that happens, it’s usually because new information has changed the investment story — earnings surprises, major guidance revisions, or structural industry tailwinds.

Over the past week, several stocks saw multiple analyst upgrades. But one name stood out. And it happens to sit right at the center of the AI infrastructure boom.

Analysts Are Piling Into This AI Infrastructure Play

Looking at analyst activity from March 2 through March 9, several stocks received multiple upgrades.

DOW 4 KeyBanc, BMO Capital, JP Morgan, RBC Capital $26 – $40
MRVL 3 Bank of America, Benchmark, KGI Securities $90 – $130
LYB 3 KeyBanc, BMO Capital, RBC Capital $51 – $82
ZION 2 Morgan Stanley, Baird $65 – $75
QSR 2 Stifel, Piper Sandler $68 – $90
TGT 2 Bernstein, Telsey Advisory Group $91 – $145

Dow Inc. led the pack with four upgrades. But the most interesting story wasn’t in chemicals or consumer stocks. It was in semiconductors.

Marvell Technology (MRVL) received three upgrades — with price targets stretching as high as $130. That’s potentially 30%+ upside from current levels. And the upgrades didn’t happen randomly. They came immediately after a major earnings surprise.

Marvell just reported:

  • EPS: $0.80 vs. $0.71 expected
  • Revenue: $2.22B vs. $2.21B expected
  • Revenue growth: 22% year over year

More importantly, management delivered very strong guidance tied directly to AI infrastructure demand.

The company now expects its AI-related data center business to grow dramatically over the next several years, with revenue potentially reaching $11 billion by 2027. That immediately caught Wall Street’s attention.

But analysts weren’t the only ones paying attention…

Options Traders and Hedge Funds Are Already Positioning

Since the March 5 earnings beat, options traders have been aggressively positioning for continued upside, with several multi-million dollar bets on MRVL reaching $100+ by mid-2026.

Based on the concentration of call buying:

Target Timeframe Confidence Supporting Flow
$100 Mar 20, 2026 Medium $422K in $100 calls
$95–100 April 2026 High $300K+ in $90–95 calls
$100–105 June 2026 High $500K+ in $100–105 calls
$105–120 Sep 2026 Medium-High $250K+ in $105–120 calls
$125+ Dec 2027 Speculative $39K in $125 calls

But the real eye-opener came from institutional filings.

Recent 13F filings also show significant accumulation in MRVL ahead of its earnings breakout. Several major hedge funds and asset managers initiated or expanded large positions.

Date Fund Shares Bought Dollar Value Avg Price Paid
Feb 17 Fidelity (FMR LLC) 5,100,000 $431M $84.51
Feb 17 Qube Research & Technologies 3,000,000 $256M $85.33
Feb 17 Royal Bank of Canada 1,900,000 $165M $86.84
Feb 13 1832 Asset Management 1,800,000 $151M $83.89
Feb 17 AQR Capital Management 1,700,000 $148M $87.06
Feb 17 Nearwater Capital Markets 1,500,000 $127M $84.67
Feb 17 Susquehanna International 1,100,000 $92M $83.64
Feb 13 Van Eck Associates 1,000,000 $86M $86.00

Feb 17 WorldQuant Millennium 827,000 $70M $84.64

Notably, most of these purchases occurred when MRVL was trading in the mid-$80s — shortly before the stock surged following its earnings beat and bullish AI guidance.

In total, over $1.6 billion in institutional buying appeared across the filings, but one transaction in particular stands out: Fidelity purchased more than $431 million worth of shares.

When a firm that large deploys nearly half a billion dollars into a position, it’s not a casual trade. It’s usually the result of deep institutional research and conviction.

The Bigger Story: AI Infrastructure Is Just Getting Started

The reason institutions are paying attention is simple. Marvell sits at the center of one of the fastest-growing segments of the AI boom: data center infrastructure.

The company provides the chips and networking technology needed to move massive volumes of data inside AI data centers. And according to management, Marvell now has design wins with all five major U.S. hyperscalers.

In other words: If the AI buildout continues — and it likely will — Marvell’s technology will likely be embedded across the infrastructure powering it. That’s exactly the type of positioning investors want when a major technology cycle unfolds.

My colleague Tara Young recently outlined a tactical way to trade MRVL right now. You can read her full breakdown here: Trade Marvell Technology (MRVL) for a 19–31% Potential Return in the Next 3–6 Months

The Takeaway

Analyst upgrades alone rarely move markets.

But when analysts, options traders, and major institutions all start leaning in the same direction, it’s usually worth paying attention.

That’s exactly what’s happening with Marvell Technology (MRVL).

  • Analysts are upgrading the stock
  • Options traders are placing large bets
  • Institutional investors are deploying billions

And all of it ties back to the same catalyst: the multi-year AI infrastructure buildout.

If that trend continues — as most analysts expect — Marvell could remain one of the key semiconductor beneficiaries of the next phase of the AI boom.

Good trading,
Greg Patrick
